05 Ford F-150 engine temp sensor

by awiguru75 on Sep 15 2017, 7:54 PM

i have a 05 f150 that keeps over heating. Gauge reads in the read thermal gun reads 220 degrees. I thought I found the right sensor but no change

thoughts!?

Those read cylinder head temp. I have seen cylinder head temps during normal driving range from 200-240. Go under global ob2 and see what coolant temp is.

Check the ohms of the sensor at different temps .

Verify that the engine is not overheating & that no combustion gas is getting in the cooling system. If that all test OK, perform a drive. Typically w/cylinder head temperature sensor failures the truck will show good coolant temperature & then almost instantly shoot to hot. Where typically if it is a cooling system related problem the gauge moves a little slower.

It is located in the valley of the engine toward the front. the pcm uses this sensor to calculate the coolant temperature.  have you done a block test to check for a leaking head gasket?

the engine coolant temperature sensor is under the intake manifold if it a 5.4 engine.

Is it really overheating (coolant boiling?) or does the gauge say its overheating? IS the coolant low? Carefully release the pressure and put a thermometer in the coolant and see if indeed it is at 220.degrees.   If it indeed it is really overheating it could be numerous things.  Start with the basics  (low coolant, air pocket, loose impeller on the pump, thermostat, radiator, fan issue, etc.) When did it start overheating?  Do you have bubbles in the coolant (if so it could be a bad head gasket) you can test for that.  I believe the thermostat is a 192 degree stat so it should run right around 195-200.  Does it cool down when driving? (air across the rad)?

The ecm monitors the cylinder head temp sensors in heads
