1999 Excursion Stiff Steering

by atwaterauto on Aug 23 2018, 6:32 PM

Anybody have issues with Ford 4X4 trucks having stiff or pointy steering?. This 99 excursion came to me with pointy steering but it's not the only Ford truck I've encountered with this. I've had similar problems after installing new joints. I've always suspected the ball joints but cant prove it. These ball joints had been installed somewhere else about a year before. . I've run out of trick to try.

I agree. Drop the steering linkage to rule out the gearbox or tie rod ends. If it still feels stiff, rule out you axle joint by rotating 90 degrees and moving the knuckle. If it’s still tight, loosen the ball joint nut a few threads and rattle it with the air hammer to get the knuckle to drop. Retighten the nut to spec and see if that remedies the situation. Overtightened ball joints will bind the steering.

I've had similar problems before with 4x4 trucks. I think with pushing them out and in sometimes affects the spacing between the two joints. I find taking the outer tie rod off the knuckle and tapping the top and bottom of the knuckle at the joints to see if that loosens it up. ( like doing a u-joint and stiff after putting in and a little tap loosens it right up. Also try and use a needle threw the boot maybe the nipple isn't allowing that much grease to flow all the way in. hope this helps!
