1999 f350 7.3 diesel hard starting

by motorcycle on Jul 14 2017, 12:21 PM

Hi,

Have a 1999 ford f350 with a 7.3 diesel.  About 350,000 miles.  Does not like to start.  This condition is in the cold and 100 degrees doesn't matter.  So not thinking glow plug problem.  Glow plugs were changed at 225,000.  Injector seals were changed and number 8 injector at 250,000.  New batteries, no codes.  It will crank but will not start.  If you spray a small shot of either in breather it starts.  It will not move at all in drive until the temperature moves about a quarter of the way up on gauge.  Pulled fuel filter, turned key on filling bowl quickly.  Fuel is ok.  Oil filter, fuel filter, oil all good.  Pulled plug and looked into oil reservoir, about a half an inch from top.  Once it warms up runs great, great power.  Will start right back up all day.  Next morning same problem.  Will crank all day and not start, unless a dab of either is sprayed in. Personal truck (I know either is bad).

Thanks.

I would say pick up tube is cracked causing a bleed down over night but you say the reservoir is full in the morning. You can overfill the oil level by 4qts and jack the rear of the truck up to test pick up tube. I would also run an injector buzz test and not only look for codes from the IDM but listen to how the injectors sound during the test. Injectors that sound muted could be trouble. I would be looking hard at both my ICP pressure and injector function.

I have replaced a handful of HPOP's. Not terribly common, but they do fail. I agree that the pressure regulator is a more common failure. Those are not the only possibilities though. Make sure to pressure test the system.

Only seen it a couple times, but make sure the injection pressure regulator is functioning correctly.  7.3's are pretty much bulletproof in my experience, never had to change an HPOP on one of those.

Agree, it needs 500 psi minimum to start when watching cranking oil pressure.

With a good scan tool, check injection control pressure while cranking. If injection control pressure is low, start checking injection pressure regulator, injector oil return, high pressure pump, etc. Most of the time we find a loss of injection pressure. Look inside the reservoir for the injection pump & if the oil has air bubbles in it, it may have an oil pick-up tube or seal crack as well. Have seen that a time or two.
