2000 Ford F150 5.4L Battery Indicator light Intermittently coming on

by techjake on Aug 09 2017, 2:57 PM

i have this issue currently with when i crank the vehicle up in the morning the battery light will illuminate, but the voltage gauge reading normal and also the alternator is putting out 13-13.8 volts. my issue is im wondering if my amps output is not up to spec causing the light....thought?

Start with a scan tool to measure the system voltage PID. That will tell you what the computer is sensing. If it is different than what you measure with a voltmeter across the battery terminals, then your next move should be to break out a wiring diagram and check voltage readings in the related circuitry.

13.8 volts is not that low if you are measuring at the battery after a cold start on a slightly discharged battery. Look for voltage drops across cables. Also with a scan tool, make sure the voltage that the computer sees is the same as the output at the alternator & at the battery. If there variation, start there.

!3.8 volts seems low. Have you tried it with a load on the system such as the headlights blower and wipers? I bet you'll find the voltage drops even lower.

13 volts is kind of low output for the alternator. When you blip the throttle does it jump up to 15v and the light goes away?
