Most common failure for me is that they are worn. Always check hardware, parking brake cables, wheel cylinders for leakage and movement.

I would say being machined past their limits, which leads to overheating and cracking.

What I have noticed would be the springs rusting and breaking and then causing hardware malfunctions

Rear trans/ axle seal may leak fluid inside the drum. Mostly heat, corrosion, dirt, star wheel gets stuck or teeth break. Return springs may loose its tension. The material of the pads. Cylinder leakage, be careful while checking dust boot, it might break. Tip: press on it and watch for fluid run out.

Springs rusting and breaking due to salt water.

cheap shoes or older shoes wearing unevenly will cause uneven wear on the drums,  leading to warpage.  water absorption in the shoe material can lead to the rapid rotting of the friction material

Another common problem depending where you live, is that if braking while driving down grades & then setting the parking brake when stopped. If the drum is hot & then the parking brake gets set they will warp. I am aware that may be more common in specific parts of the country. Next here is worn out shoes & leaky wheel cylinders.

Worn out lining, leaking wheel cylinders, rusty e-brake cables that seize up and cause the brakes to drag.
