2004 ford f150 vvt solenoid and valve clatter

by toptech1 on Nov 30 2017, 1:36 PM

I recently replaced a motor that had ridiculous amounts of valve clatter when first started and while running so the customer decided to put a motor in when ever the new motor arrived I noticed that the 5.4 triton motors VVT solenoids had been updated and so I would say that if you have any valve clatter on a 5.4 try changing the VVT solenoids first before you just throw a motor in it

Always check base oil pressure first. The new spec is 15 psi minimum at hot idle in gear. If you have at least 15 psi or more and the engine has been maintained ( not much sludge or varnish ) then installing the updated VVT solenoids might be an option.

First thing I would do is pull valve covers and remove the first camshaft bearing cap. if there is any wear then you need to replace the cylinder heads. Those VVT Motors are are horrible on cylinder journal wear. I causes an internal oil pressure leak.
