by mrmagnum on May 03 2019, 4:16 AMAt our shop, a customer came in with a routine winter tire change over and we noticed it needed rear pads and rotors. We were given the go ahead to do the job and the vehicle was given new Wagner pads and rotors and all the hardware was cleaned and lubricated. All contact points were cleaned and lubricated as well. When the job was done, the brake pedal was "pumped up." Now if the pedal was left for more than 30 seconds the brake pedal would be low. To make a long story short, we found that due to excessive rust on the caliper pistons, the seals on the pistons got wound up when we turned the pistons in during the brake job. The seals would wind the pistons back in after the brake pedal was released. A change of the rear calipers solved the problem. Since our area (southern Ontario) has been using a Salt Brine in the winter for ice melting, we have been seeing more and more corrosion problems such as this.
