72 chevy c10 cough at idle

by marty095 on Sep 06 2017, 12:41 PM

I have a 1972 Chevy C10 that has a persistent "cough" at idle.  I have replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor.  Choke was adjusted too closed and after adjusting it properly, now the cough is more frequent but less intense when it occurs.  This never happens off idle and it happens regardless of ported or intake vacuum source.  I am suspicious of the vacuum advance canister and will be testing its function today.  Anyone have any ideas?  Something I am overlooking?

If the points and condenser are a uni-set I have seen these cause issues. I always install a separate points and condenser.

I had the same issue on my 63 C 10. I found that the choke was still closing and had to adjust it further, along with fuel/air ratio.

    hi,

at idle, if you're using ported vacuum, you will have base advance only, whereas with intake vacuum, you'll have full advance at idle. check your base timing. i think those called for 10deg BTDC. before messing with the timing though, if you're running points, check their condition. if even remotley questionable, replace them along with the condenser. set your dwell to about 30-32 degrees. once you've set your dwell, disconnect any vacuum lines to the dist. and set your base timing to about 10 deg BTDC.  be sure you've gapped your plugs properly too. i almost forgot....check the dist. shaft. make sure the bushings aren't going bad, letting the shaft wobble inside the housing. check your timing chain for slack.

also, check your base idle speed. if your idle is a little high, you'll be pulling from the power circuit inside the carb, and that'll "dump" fuel, possibly causing this condition.

i can't think of anything else right now, but i hope this helps ya some.

Do you still have points in this truck? If so have you checked the dwell?
