Beware the tear! 2013 Sonic MAF and Lean codes.

by shadetreetech on Nov 16 2017, 7:57 PM

A customer had just been to Auto Zone with their 2013 Chevy Sonic 1.8. They scanned the PCM and found a P0101 and P0171; and suggested a mass air flow sensor. Thankfully the customer opted to have the problem diagnosed . Reading the codes and watching the fuel trims showed the PCM was correcting for a lean condition. A visual inspection showed no obvious problems. Digging a little further I removed the air filter cover and found the intake boot torn! As it turns out this is HUGE problem on these cars and are covered by a campaign through GM.

I had a similar experience on one of these.  It actually had a P0171 lean.  I found the split boot by spraying carb cleaner and watching my short term fuel trims going very negative indicating an air leak.  Upon inspection the air intake boot was ripped.

You definitely caught that one pretty easily. Another known common issue that will set those same codes, on this engine in both the Sonic and Cruze vehicles, Ian a tear in the PCV diaphragm located in the cylinder head cover assembly. You may notice a whistling sound at idle. If you remove the oil dipstick, the sound goes away, and sometimes you can get hear a suction sound coming from the small port located on the valve cover. Just something else to be wary of. I have replaced probably a dozen or so of these assemblies.
