I recommend replacing your convertor with a dealer replacement.  I have used aftermarket convertors before, only to have them come back 6 months to a year latter.

Be careful with aftermarket converters, some may not meet oem specs. The check engine light may come back on.

We have had good luck with Walker converters.

First make sure it is a bad converter, not and o2 sensor, if it is a bad converter I like OME (original manufacture equipment) parts, because most are direct fit and will bolt right in, they do cost more but the converter will be located in the right spot, a universal will work just make sure it is welded in the right spot,

It depends if you want a direct replacement or a universal style converter. Universal converters are still application spectific but may have to be cut and will have to be welded in place. At our shop we mostly use AP exhaust technologies products or magnaflow and almost all are a universal style converter because of the cheaper cost.

It depends on the vehicle and which converter is bad.an easy place to help determine the best  way to proceed is magnaflow.com.you can see all available options and go from there

It would help to know the make, model and engine size of the vehicle.
