Wiper blades can be cleaned with some rubbing alcohol and a rag.  Wet the rag with the alcohol and slide along the rubber blade.  Now your wipers will perform like new.

In a dry climate, the problem we have is the wiper blades come apart. I have tried the alcohol wipes, but it is so temporary that it isn't worth the effort. We just replace wiper blades 1-2 times per year. Gotta love the desert.
