Compressing caliper pistons

When compressing caliper pistons it is a good idea to open the bleeder screw to expel the fluid instead of forcing it back thru the lines and ABS hydraulic components and master cylinder as the dirty fluid might cause a problem, which I have seen happen several times.

Also when pumping the brake pedal after brake pads are replaced. I have quit pumping the brake pedal all the way down. I just pump a few more times in the normal area of use. We were having the occasional master cylinder fade after a brake job. Since I have quit pushing the pedal to the floor, haven't had to replace a master cylinder. We believe that crud builds up where below the where the piston doesn't normally travel in the master cylinder. When pushing over this area, it either tears the seal or get debris in it andd no longer allows it to seal.

Always...  we had to replace too many master cylinders prior to starting this practice.  Since then, we've had a lot fewer issues.
