Decel vibration

by krhearn40 on Jun 14 2017, 4:38 PM

2004 Ram 2500 CTD 24v. This truck originally came in for a high speed vibration. About 70mph and up. Did the obvious and road forced and balanced tires. Checked driveshaft for out of round. Found driveshaft to be out of round. Sent the driveshaft out, it was .026 out. Customer had them build a 4" shaft with new yokes and joints. Said it was good for about a week. I've looked at it again, shaft is running straight. Joints are good. I can feel an ever so slight vibration on accel around 65mph. When you let off of the throttle, it will really vibrate. The only other thing I can think of is a worn chain in the transfer case, but I don't want to call that yet. Any ideas?

We recently had a similiar issue on a Dodge Ram 3500.  A bad universal joint was the problem.

I would drop the front shaft and drive.

NVH issues can be troublesome. You can find a NVH app for your smart phone or I-pad. Using frequency, RPM, and a little bit of math, you can determine a first, second , or third order vibration. This makes it very easy to find the cause of any vibration. Do a little research and you will be amazed how useful of a tool this can be., Check out  NVH by vibration software on the app store. Enter year, make, and, model. Go for a drive. It can tell you if you have an unbalanced pulley, tire, or driveshaft. Might seem a little expensive, but you can always buy the NVH analyzer from pico scope.

try the transmission mount height because if it collasped or the rubber went soft it will change the driveline angle

Lift it up and check for U-joint play. If that is good remove the front driveshaft and drive it.

check alignment and trac bar, seen this on other straight axles, the ram trucks have horrible front end components
