How do you determine emissions to be Federal or California when there is no clear and apparent identification?

I would check the emissions tag first. If it's not there, try decoding the VIN, if no luck with that then just give the dealer a quick call with the VIN. :)

You can also use a VIN decoder. Depending on how new the vehicle is & what make it is. We use Repair-link to connect to various dealer networks & can decode VIN #'s that way. Also you can find VIN decoders on-line.

Pop the hood, If you read the Emissions Tag and it says California its a Cal. if not Its a Federal... very few cars i have seen say "does not meet california" all of those being Euro. Also Depending on your scanner If you do a Vin insertion usually it will come up with all specifics of engine size, transmission, and Emissions standards met.

    Cheers

Personally if it was not present on the emissions label or the label was missing I would call the dealer and give them the VIN and have them break it down for you. Make the dealer work for you!!
