Engine oil

by actiontire57 on Jul 30 2017, 1:42 PM

On a 2013 Dodge Dart with a 1.4L turbo. The car says use 5W40 MS 12991. Can I run any 5W40 that does no meet MS 12991?

I would be sticking with what the auto manufacture suggests to use for engine oil.

I would be sticking with what the vehicle calls for. Not worth the risk of putting oil in that does not meet the specs.

Just make sure the spec is listed on the bottle of oil you are using matches what the oem says. Not worth the risk. If the the engine breaks and you were the last one to service it, you could be liable whether the wrong oil caused it or not. All the customer has to do is prove you installed the wrong oil and you could be buying them an engine. Seen it happen in small claims court.

I like to stick with the oil and filter that the manufacturer recommends.  If you have any warranty left that is very important.  I believe that is a Euro spec oil.  Many brands of oil meet that spec in addition to the jugs the Chrysler dealer will sell you.  It is not cheap oil but cheap oil is usually just that, cheap oil.
