Improper timing marks listed in Mitchell

by voltageviking on Aug 17 2017, 1:33 PM

I recently replaced a water pump on a 1999 VW Cabrio 2.0 manual transmission, normally aspirated engine. It requires removing the auxiliary sprocket, and I accidentally let the cam move while the belt was off. Looking in Mitchell tells you that the three marks you have to line up are on the cam, distributor, and back of the crankshaft. My problem with this, is that the marks in the crank as described by Mitchell are incorrect. It describes the mark as looking like:

I   O

That stamp does exist, but isn't incorrect. The correct mark is about 40 degrees advanced from the above marking, and appears as an "I" on top of a diamond. This marking also corresponds with the mark on the back of the crankshaft pulley when reinstalled. Use the mark on the pulley rather than the rear. This discrepancy in Mitchell cost me so much time retracing my steps.

Making your own marks is the safest bet. I might own stocks in Sharpie markers honestly.

I have run into issues like this before. Make your own marks if you can but if the belt is gone or slipped it can be a trick to find the correct time.

What a mess! Just as a precaution; because this has happened to me too; I always use a paint maker and mark all of the of the positions before I take the belt off. It's always worked for me as a quick reference to verify a proper installation.
