Persistent valve cover leak

by honeybadgerted on Jul 01 2017, 7:36 PM

2000 excursion v10 4x4. Uses 1 quart of oil per month. 3rd set of felpro valve cover gaskets. Always leaks at the back of cyl5. No machine marks or other debris, good clean surface every time. Still leaks. Any ideas?

First off, can you confirm the part number of the gasket set you’re using? It should be VS 50547 R. You’re doing the right thing by installing the gasket clean and dry. The only places sealant should be applied is at the two joints where the front cover meets the cylinder head.

Check the valve cover with a quality straight-edge to ensure it isn’t warped. If it’s flat and true and the sealing surfaces of the valve cover and cylinder head are clean, dry, and undamaged, clean the area and grab an extendable mirror to make sure it’s the valve cover itself that’s leaking. One area to check would be the breather hose that runs from the valve cover to the throttle body – this can leak and cause quite a mess, and is a fairly common leak point.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

Probably best to use rtv silicone

You will have to pull the valve cover & check it for distortion with a straight edge. Also check the cylinder head for any irregularities that would cause it not to seal. Make sure that there are no cracks in the valve cover itself or that the there is no cracking in the valve cover retaining threads in the cylinder head.
