Phenolic brakes

by mateotech on Oct 09 2018, 12:16 AM

Why is it that every other ford pickup is coming in with locked brakes? My shop is always having to replace the calipers in pairs with the hoses. Is there a reason why the phenolic caliper fails so much?

Most of the time I see that it is the broke hoses that are causing all the problem.  The road pre-treatment is the culprit with causing the hose problems here where I'm from also.  The metal bracket wrapped around the hose rusts from the road salt and causes a flaking rust to form around the hose clamping it off.  This will cause a brake to stick and also cause a brake pull because of the delay of fluid getting to caliper.

We have seen a steady rise in caliper replacement since our area has started pre treating the roads in winter with a liquid substance.

I have to agree, regular brake fluid maintenance ( full brake hydraulic system flush) will extend the life of brake hydraulic components.  Many manufacturers recommend flushing the brake fluid every 30k miles.

The biggest problem is not so much the type of caliper pistons as it is the lack of brake fluid service. Ford trucks are notorious for failed brake hoses and calipers due to contaminated fluid.
