Subaru head gaskets

Hey guys, just wondering what everyone has luck with for Subaru 2.5 head gaskets. Just got a 2012 outback on with the SOHC EJ25 and want this set to last. The car only has 80k miles and they’re already leaking.

The EJ25 seem to have more problems then the EJ20. When replacing the gasket make sure the head and the block surfaces are clean. If any residue is left behind you can use 2000 grit+ wet sand paper and wd40 and polish off the residue, but go slow and don't sand the metal. People also try scraping the surface with a razor blade. Your engine block is aluminum and the razor blade will scratch it, don't use one. Other then that, not beating on the engine, and torquing the the studs down correctly is all you can do.

This is a very common issue with the EJ25. I have done several head gasket jobs on these engines. The most frequent failure area is at the very bottom of the heads particularly around the oil return galleys. I have a 2008 Impreza with 59,000 on it and they have been leaking for a little while already. I won't lo likely replace them until it leaks badly enough where I have to add oil in between changes or the dripping on the exhaust on the right side creates a constant smell while driving. The good news is once they are replaced properly with machining the heads they do no leak again, at least from what ive seen. Other than the head gasket issue the EJ25s are good long lasting reliable engines.

This seems to be a common issue with the EJ25 platform. We have repaired a few of these in our shop. 2.0 boxers seem to not have this issue. Has to do with the design of the block decking. Most of the Suby 2.5's are of an "open deck" design. Heads can warp, causing coolant leaks.
