Synthetic oil changes

by knt auto sales on Aug 01 2018, 1:42 PM

Pretty basic question BUT how are you all selling synthetic oil changes?  We have alot of older customers that have been buying newer vehicles.  The problem is they dont beleave you have to use a synthetic oil and refuse to I think cause of the price point more then anything. So how are you convincing customers to use it?

We tell them what the manufacturer recommends and also include a snip-it of the fluid type and capacity from the service manual with their invoice or estimate.

0W20 synthetic oil changes are cheaper in the long run (better fuel economy and go longer on the oil). The oil life indicator is set for the OEM oil and usually syn. The manual even says 5W20 may be used then 0W20 is not available but must use 0W20 next oil change.

Agree with the owners manual suggestion and the oil filler cap. If you have net' capabilities (and the time) - have them Google synthetic oil change for their particular vehicle?

In most cases I refer them to the owners manual of there car. If they don't have one I'll pull the cap off and show them the oil requirements. Worst case I will not perform the oil change and send them to the dealership.

Show your customers the value, of it if they complian about the cost show that instead of changing at 5000-6000Km they can go 8000Km and some of the OE dealers are saying 10000KM. That always works for me.

Yes i do have that 1 customer request 10w30 (because thats the oil he used for that last 50 years) when it should be 5w30 or 5w20.

Talk to him about the modern engines and that there not cast any more and show them what they are made up of plastic ect...... that always works for me.

If they are not willing to use the proper oil, let them go somewhere else. As the professional, if you put the wrong oil in, regardless of customer request, you assume some liability. It is just a matter of when, not if it will cost you. We will just flat let people walk if they don't want to do it right

Showing the owners manual works about 50% of the time about 25% just do as we suggest but the other 25% is the problem they are older customers and to boot its mostly old farmers which lets face it are the cheapest people around.  I make sure they are informed as much as I can and explain the fact that they will void warranty if they do not use synthetic oils, they respond with I shouldnt need it anyway as we have never had a issue doing things the old way.

I pull out the owners manual and show them in black and white what the manufacturer requires.
