ThermoQuiet Pad Defect

by czechsonme on Jun 22 2017, 9:03 PM

I installed a set of front ThermoQuiet pads on a 2013 Kia Sorento a few months back. After initial seating, the right front pad continued to produce a grinding sound from time to time. Upon inspection, it was noted that the related rotor was groved, and assumed a rock was lodged at some point but no longer apparent. The grinding noise continued, and second and third inspection (dealership) concluded the pad has a defect in the matrix that appears to be a chunk of metal. This defect has caused significant damage to the rotor (it will need to be replaced). I've done quite a few brake jobs in the last couple of decades and never seen this problem, has anyone else?

I'm surprised to see this happen to a higher end product such as Thermo Quiet pads. I have seen this happen with "white box" pads where they have "who knows what" as their friction material. I actually had to replace a set of cheap pads recently that another garage installed due to excessive noise. After installing Thermo Quiet pads the noise was GONE. I'm sure this was just a rare Q.C. oversight as Wagner makes a superior product.

The only issues I've experienced not only with thermoquiets but happening more and more with all brake pads is that they are not machined right. I've been having to grind down the ears on the pads alot lately to fit right in the brackets.  I've cleaned all rust from the brackets and installed new hardware and the brake pads still were either way too tight or wouldnt fit in the bracket at all.

Thanks for sharing.  We have not seen any issues with the Wagner brake pads. But I've been involved in this industry for over 30 years and have seen the occasional issue from different manufactures over that time period.  I'm glad to see that they took care of you, a top notch company that really seems to care about there product and reputation.
