those tools you only use once

by kriikkula1 on Jan 25 2018, 12:38 PM

i have always had this discussion with people and they are on both sides of the fence about it,

when you need a specific tool for one job and you are uncertain if you are ever going to use that tool again do you

1. rent and return     or

2. buy it so it takes up room in your tool box in hopes you may end up using it atleast once more to get your moneys worth out of that tool

We are on good terms with other local shops and we let each other borrow tools. If nobody has it I will purchase the tool so that if needed again we are covered.

Buy it and hope. That is what I do.

If possible borrow it.  If it's something I might have a slight possibility of using in the future, I will research the internet to see if I can find a good price on it. Some tools seem to come down in price when the demand for them drops off. Case in point, the Ford 5.4 triton valve spring compressor is now available for about 1/2 of what it used to sell for.

Have never rented tools. We work with a handful of shops/technicians that are friends of ours. We all share specialty tools. Together we have great tool coverage. If you have friends you trust, this gig works out really well.

Buy the tool. Then let your local shops know that you have the ability to do that specific job. My bays are filled from other shops who don't have the knowledge or tools to do certain jobs!

Rent it if you can! We all have these tools in our tool box and go well that was a waste of money!
