The first thing I check on a vehicle with a VVT code is the oil level and if the oil is the proper viscosity.

oil and filter service at the proper intervals is as important as the correct oil type & viscosity. I found that car fax is a useful tool if we do not have the complete service history on a vehicle, most shops can get car fax for free, you can reach out to car fax @ 1-888-655-2664

The biggest problem that we see is low or contaminated oil.

A trick I learned on Ford VVT is to unplug the VVT solenoids and test drive . If the symptom goes away then the problem is VVT system.  I am sure this strategy could be used on other makes.

We see alot of issues with the solenoides getting plugged up.  biggest issue is not doing the oil changes when needed and going thousands past due or not using the proper oil for the vehicle.  You can see the fillings and dirt on the screens of most of them.
