As long as the oil says it meets whatever the VW standard is, it's absolutely fine to use!

Penzoil makes a good European formula oil for the VW, Mercedes, Audi, etc. As long as it says on the back that it meets the requirements for the vehicle, you will be fine.

Most import european manufacturers are very specific in the type of engine oil that needs to be used to maintain the life of the motor and warranty.  European formulated oils are designed to meet the specifications put out by Mercedes, VW, Audi, etc...

Simply following the weight/viscosity is not good enough.  The oil used must meet or exceed the manufacturer's wear specifications.  You can use any brand of oil you choose, as long as it meets/exceeds the specifications.

Personally as far as different Oil weights go I think the Euro Spec oils are much better due to the wider range in viscosity such as 5W60. You can run some thing such as that here and run it year round with no worries! Just my 2.......

YOU CAN USE ENGINE OIL THAT MEETS TEH SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE VEHICLE. SEE NO HARM IN THAT AS LONG AS IT MEETS THEIR REQUIREMENTS THERE IS NOTHING THE DEALER CAN DO ABOUT WARRANTY ETC.

I would only use the volkswagen approved engine oil in it, but do not have to buy the engine oil from the dealer.
