Getting the Right Ball Joint for 2014-2016 Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500

Inside the Issue

With millions of models on the nation’s highways, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks are among General Motors’ most popular offerings. While getting parts to complete a repair is typically a straightforward process, selecting a replacement ball joint for 2014-2016 Silverado and Sierra models can be challenging. When searching MOOG’s part finder for a ball joint, there are three different ball joints to choose from. Please note that the information outlined below also applies to the Chevrolet Avalanche truck and a variety of full-size SUVs including the Chevrolet Suburban 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL 1500.

Getting the Right Ball Joint

Besides the typical year, make and model information, there’s an additional piece of information you’ll need to select the correct ball joint. When looking up the part by application within the MOOG part finder or DRiV digital catalog, pay close attention to the qualifiers / additional fit criteria. You’ll notice that each of the ball joints offered is for a control arm that is made of a different material. Determining what material the control arm is made of is the key to getting the correct ball joint.

How to Determine What the Control Arm is Made Of

These trucks came from the factory with control arms made of either aluminum, stamped steel or cast iron. Doing a visual inspection is the best way to determine which material your vehicle’s control arms is made of. To get started, wash off the control arm, a buildup of dirt and grime can make it hard to determine what kind of control arm you have.

An easy way to determine if the control arm is made of steel is to wave a magnet over it. If the magnet doesn’t stick, it is an aluminum arm. If the magnet sticks, it is a cast iron or stamped steel control arm. To determine if it is a cast iron or stamped steel control arm, tap it with a hammer. If it sounds hollow, it is a stamped steel control arm; if you hear a dull thud, it is a cast iron control arm.

Once you know the material the control arms are made of, you’ll be able to select the right ball joint.
