Key Steering Component
Designed to keep your wheel attached to your vehicle while allowing it to freely turn, hub assemblies are critical for safe and reliable operation of your vehicle. Hub assemblies must resist rain, snow, road chemicals and dirt, bear the weight of the vehicle and cornering loads, and rotate at high speeds, all while exposed to extreme temperatures from the environment and heat generated from braking. Vehicles operating in cold, wet and corrosive environments commonly see the life of hub assemblies reduced. MOOG® engineers set out to improve its hub assemblies to ensure that they could withstand these real-world conditions.

Testing to Ensure Durability
During the development and testing process, engineers found that standard industry tests didn’t adequately reproduce real-world conditions in cold, wet and corrosive environments. To better simulate the real world, MOOG engineers developed testing parameters that go beyond industry standards. After making a good correlation of the real world to laboratory testing, MOOG engineers were able to rapidly develop and test potential improvements. One test that helped MOOG improve sealing ability of the hub assembly is a patent-pending water immersion test.
To conduct the test, MOOG engineers first heat the hub assembly to 200°F. Next, the hub is weighed and temperature shocked by plunging it into icy cold water. The extreme temperature difference creates a vacuum which attempts to pull water past the hub’s sealing lips. Afterwards, the hub is removed, examined and precisely weighed to check for any signs of water entering the bearing cavity. As a result of this testing, you can count on MOOG for an enhanced hub assembly that is proven to perform. Standard for Sealed MOOG’s enhanced hub assembly sets a new standard for quality and sealing. These latest hub innovations deliver enhanced resistance against damaging water, dirt, chemicals and contaminants.
